Calm In The Storm

Passage: Matthew 8:23-27

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

We left the story last time when Jesus got into a boat to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. He had just challenged those who would follow him—making it clear that it’s hard. It’s not easy. And it requires us to be P.C. Not Politically Correct—the way we typically use that acronym—but instead, if we’re to follow Jesus we need to make a Personal Commitment, to Prioritize Christ, and to have Practical Courage. That’s what it takes to follow Jesus—to be a disciple. And there were those there that day when Jesus got into the boat who were committed to these three things. They counted the cost and followed anyway. They weren’t perfect, of course, but they were willing to step out in faith knowing it wouldn’t be easy. So we pick up the story Sunday in Matthew 8 where they run into a great storm on the sea. But we also see Jesus bring great calm in the midst of it. He’s going to prove that he has power and authority—even over the natural world. It’s going to be shocking and revealing. Shocking because of the power ofGod—and revealing because of the weakness and lack of faith in man. It’s a great story that’s been told over and over again ever since the events happened.
